Defense shines in Wolf Pack scrimmage

RENO - Nevada's defense controlled Saturday's 90-minute scrimmage at Mackay Stadium, as the Wolf Pack closed its fall practice.

"There was some good hitting," said Nevada coach Chris Ault, whose team opens the season Sept. 5 at Notre Dame. "The offense went backards (today). We have a long way to go."

Defensive backs Antoine Thompson and Khalid Wooten each intercepted a pass, while James-Michael Johnson added two sacks for minus-12 yards and two other tackles for loss. Kevin Grimes, Kevin Basped, Seann Green, Mark Avery and Chris Slack contributed a sack apiece. Ryan Coulson led all defenders with five tackles from his defensive end spot.

The offense scored four times, as reserve quarterback David Fisher threw a 65-yard TD pass to Joseph Huber, who finished with two catches for 109 yards, and tight end Zach Sudfeld caught three passes for 65 yards and two scores. Lampford Mark carried three times for 10 yards and a score.

Starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick went 11-for-19 for 137 yards and Tyler Lantrip went 5-for-15 for 101 yards.

"Our quarterbacks were average," Ault said.
