Nobody Asked Us, But ... Labor Day is right around the corner

The Kennedy family has had its share of sorrows, the latest being the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy. May he rest in peace, and may his family find consolation in his memory. And our deepest sympathy goes out to the Felesina and Kidder families on the death of their mother Geni. She was a wonderful lady.

School has begun, so watch out for the little nippers. The Labor Day holiday begins next weekend, so have a picnic, ride the trains at the RR Museum and the V&T, and salute the people who labor to make this country the best in the world.

From the Internet and Russ Law: "An old grandfather is dying and calls for his grandson. 'I want you to take my chrome-plated .38 revolver so you will always remember me.' 'But Grandpa, I don't like guns. How about giving me your Rolex instead?' 'You listen to me ... someday you're going to run the business ... you'll have a beautiful wife, lots of money, a big home and maybe a couple of kids. Someday you're going to come home and maybe find your wife in bed with another man. What're you going to do then? Point to your watch and say, 'Time's up?'"

Carson grad Mike "Zach" Zacharias is opening a new bar in Kingston, Nev. (Where's that, you say? Past Austin, in the middle of nowhere ... look on a map, or call 775-964-2000 for directions). It's called Zach's Lucky Spur Saloon, and they're having their grand opening Labor Day, with food, fun and drink. Think of how you'll help the economy of Kingston if you go ... yippee! Zach and Louise will be glad to see ya'll.

Carolyn has weathered the "flood" at her home. Seems the washing machine didn't turn off the water when it should have, and she came home to the "eastern arm" of Washoe Lake. After getting the water drained and the fans turned on, then came the demolition of the rug, floors and whatever else went south. She's finally getting things back in order, and is waiting for her stove to be hooked up again so she can get back to normal (that's a "subjective" statement per MHJ). NOT one of life's pleasant surprises.

Maizie decided to get more education and signed up for conversational Arabic at WNC this fall ... even got the book. Not going to be educated for long ... the course was canceled for lack of students. Maybe next year. Ratz.

This fall, with all the dire warnings about the swine flu (remember when we used to say, "When pigs fly?" Apparently, they already did ... groan), we reiterate: Wash your hands frequently. Then, maybe, we should all take a cue from the Holland American Lines and Raley's, etc. and have disinfectant squirts all over the place, or handy wipes to kibosh the germs. Hope everyone gets the message, at least until you can get the vaccine in October and November (remember ... it takes TWO shots). Stay well!
