WNC student design celebrates state parks

Western Nevada College graphic communication student Bethany Surber is part of a Silver State milestone. The graphic logo she designed is helping to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Nevada's state parks. With her clever design, she is also letting outsiders know how to pronounce the state's name.

Surber's distinctive logo features an accent over the first "a" that stresses the preferred pronunciation of the Silver State's name. The student won the Nevada Division of State Parks logo design contest celebrating the parks' diamond jubilee in 2010. For her design, Surber won $250, and the logo will appear on T-shirts, hats, coffee mugs, medallions and other souvenirs sold at state park visitor centers.

Nevada's state park system was authorized by the 1935 Nevada Legislature and now operates 24 parks, recreation areas and historic sites.

Surber's digital artwork can also be seen Jan. 4-7 in the College Gallery as part of a student show by Prof. Jayna Conkey's advanced digital photography class. Western's art galleries are located in the Bristlecone Building on the campus at West College Parkway. All exhibits are free and may be viewed during normal business hours.
