WNC splits double-header

LAS VEGAS " Josh Moody and Kyle DiMartino combined to limit South Mountain Community College to four hits to lead Western Nevada to a 6-1 win and a split of Saturday's double-header at Sierra Vista High School.

Western Nevada dropped the seven-inning opener 3-2 when it stranded the tying and winning runs at second and third, respectively.

The four-gfame series concludes today at 11, and Rusty Devitt gets the start for WNC. After playing that game, the first game that was stopped because of a lighting malfunction at UNLV on Friday will be completed. The game was stopped in the eighth with WNC trailing 9-3.

Moody worked the first five innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run. He fanned two and didn't walk a batter. DiMartino, a transfer from the University of Nevada, worked the final four innings and didn't allow a hit or walk while fanning three.

"No walks in a nine-inning game is very tough to do," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "South Mountain has a great lineup. To hold them to one run means they did a nice job.

"We feel like we have to play close to perfect to beat them. We played well enough to win the first game, too."

WNC took a 2-0 lead in the third when Andrew Garcia doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Cory Raymond's infield out. Jay Skilton walked and scored when the left fielder misplayed Lance Ray's single.

South Mountain scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an error by WNC.

The Wildcats made it 4-1 in the fifth when Raymond singled, stole second and third, and scored on Skilton's double. Ray followed with a run-scoring double.

In the sixth, Mike Stiles walked, stole second and scored on a wild pick-off throw to make it 5-1. In the seventh, Skilton walked and scored when Ray's fly ball was misplayed.

Ray went 2-for-4, scored three times and drove in a run, while Skilton, Skiles, Garcia and Raymond added a hit apiece.

In the opener, WNC snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth when Ray hit a one-out single, stole second and scored on an error.

South Mountain scored three times in the sixth off reliever Kramer Champlin, who allowd two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings aftr starter Jordan Lewis worked the first 4.2 innings.

The Wildcats made it 3-2 in the seventh when Brett Moravec doubled home a run. The following hitter grounded into the hole between short and third, but was thrown out to end the contest.

Moravec went 2-for-3, while Daniel Zylstra, Ray and Travis Feiner added a hit apiece.
