Gifted children will choose a state insect

State lawmakers are calling on gifted fourth-graders to get buggin'.

Fourth-graders in gifted and talented programs across the state are invited to participate in a contest to select the state's insect.

"Since Nevada is only one of a handful of states that does not have an official state insect, Assemblyman (Lynn) Stewart and myself thought this would be a tremendous learning opportunity for students to not only learn more about science, but the processes utilized by our state government as well," state Sen. Joyce Woodhouse, D-Clark County, said in a press release.

"As former teachers, the idea of having our children involved in the selection process is something that appeals to both of us."

To participate, students will need to submit a one-page essay supporting the nomination and provide reasons why that insect would be a good representation of the state.

Nomination must meet the scientific definition of an insect. Butterflies, bees, ladybugs and praying mantis are eligible. Spiders need not apply " they're arachnids.

Entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges including an entomologist, representatives from the Nevada Department of Education, Nolen and other specialists.
