Fishing season opens in part of Lyon County

Fishing opens this weekend in the Fourth Churchill Cooling Pond cooperative management area in Lyon County. The season starts Saturday and runs through Sept. 30. Limit is 15 game fish of which not more than 2 may be black bass. Minimum size for black bass is 14 inches. Fishing is prohibited from the center dike and posted areas. Wading or the use of boats and other floating devices in prohibited.

Fishing season is open year-round on the East Walker River in Lyon County.

Duck Stamp contest open

Entries for the 2009 Junior Duck Stamp contest are being accepted now through March 15.

The contest theme is "connecting children with nature through science and art."

Junior Duck Stamps sell for $5 each at post offices and wildlife refuges. Proceeds from the sale of Junior Duck Stamps are returned to the states for environmental and conservation education programs.

Prizes are $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 for the first, second and third place entries respectively.

The national winner, along with one parent or guardian and teacher will receive a trip to Washington, DC, to participate in ceremony on the first day of sales.

Trout derby this weekend at Dunn's

Dunn's Wildhorse Trout Derby will be Saturday and Sunday.

There will be a $1,000 prize for first place. There is $25 entry fee. Longest trout: $500 first place; $300 second place; $200 third place. Prizes will be awarded at 5 p.m. daily. Door prizes will be awarded at 7 p.m. daily. There will be merchandise donated to local dealers. Bring your ice skates as there will be an ice park.
