WNC baseball sweeps Reedley; softball team swept

The turning point may be here for the Western Nevada College baseball team.

The Wildcats (6-6) completed the sweep of Reedley College on Saturday with wins of 19-1 and 13-0 in a doubleheader.

Eric Maupin, a Galena product, busted out of his slump in the first game. He went 2-for-5 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. One of the homers was a grand slam.

"He wasn't in that much of a slump, he was just hitting it at people," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "If that's a slump than he just hit where they couldn't get it."

Maupin was hitting less than .200 going into Saturday.

Four pitchers combined for a four-hitter. Kyle Starrat picked up the win in four innings of work, allowing three hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

In the second game, Travis Feiner provided the power as he went 4-for-4 with a three-run home run and a two-run double. He finished with six RBIs.

The Wildcats' pitchers gave up just one hit. Jordan Lewis picked up the win and Javy Perez finished the game, giving up the lone hit.

"We played really well in all three phases of the game," Whittemore said. "We threw a ton of strikes, played great defense and, obviously, the run support.

WNC canceled its games scheduled for today and Monday against Modesto and Cosumnes, respectively, because of a storm that is expected to hit the area.

Softball swept AGAIN

The Wildcats lost their final two games at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, 10-1 and 3-1. Snow College swept WNC (4-12) in the four-game series.

Alyson Herman picked up the loss in the first game, which was her third start in as many games.

"They just came out hitting on us," WNC coach Scott Rasner said. "Herman was just tired, she's been carrying the load for us."

Ambar Huish went 2-for-2 in the game with a double.

Huish got the start in the second game, giving up all three runs in the first inning before settling down.

She also went 3-for-4 in the game.

WNC will play a four-game series against the College of Southern Nevada on Friday with a double-header. They play a second double-header Saturday.
