Strong winds topple trucks; will last through weekend

Strong winds toppled two big-rig trucks in Washoe Valley Thursday but no serious injuries were reported.

Nevada Highway Patrol said the first truck overturned around 9:30 a.m. on Bowers Mansion Road. A second tractor-trailer was blown over on U.S. 395 around 10:45 a.m.

Trooper Chuck Allen said the second driver ignored high wind warnings prohibiting tractor-trailers, buses and other high profile vehicles through the wind-prone area.

The driver was trapped in the cab for a short time and later taken to a Reno hospital with minor injuries.

Four customers in Virginia City lost power temporarily Thursday morning because of the strong wind, said Faye Andersen of NV Energy. A few fallen tree limbs also were reported.

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong said there no reports of problems because of the strong wind Thursday.

On Wednesday, wind blew off a truck bed cover in the parking lot of the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, said Tom Jacobs, department representative.

The blowing cover broke several car windows and dented several cars.

The weekend is predicted to be gusty as well. West winds will gust up to 30 mph today, said Rudy Cruz of the National Weather Service. The high temperature will be between 50 and 55 degrees and the low temperature will be between 25 and 30 degrees.

Winds will gust up to 35 mph Saturday with a chance of snow that afternoon, he said.

The high temperature will be between 54 and 64 and the low temperature will be between 30 and 40 degrees, he said.

Rain, snow and wind will be likely Sunday, he said. The high temperature will between 49 and 59 and the low temperature will be between 25 and 35 degrees, he said.
