Lewis "Dewey" Fukui, 91, passed away Dec. 24, 2008. He was a life long resident of Carson City. He was born Jan. 1, 1917 and attended Carson public schools. Upon graduation from Carson High School, he was awarded the prestigious Outstanding All-Around student award. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1942. He was an original member of the highly decorated 442nd Infantry Division serving in the European Theater of Operation. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, the first in March 1944 while serving in France, and the second in July 1944 while serving in Italy. He was also the recipient of the Bronze Star and several other awards and decorations.
Upon his return to the United States, he was honorably discharged in October 1945. He returned to Carson City, where he established Artist Cleaners, which he operated from 1946 until his retirement in 1982.
He is survived by his wife Kiyo of 52-years; his sister, Ida Weiss of Reno, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is loved and admired for his quiet unpretentious demeanor.
A service of remembrance will be 11 a.m., Jan. 10, at Gold Dust West 2171 Hwy 50 E, Carson City, in the banquet room with lunch after.
