Gregg Lamorey, age 52, has left behind the pain and physical limits imposed on his body by colon cancer. As was typical for Gregg, even something like a terminal cancer diagnosis could not impose any limits on his spirit, and that spirit remains with family and friends today. He outlived every medical prediction regarding his condition, and he taught us incredible lessons about courage. We miss him already.

Prior to his employment as the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Gregg earned a bachelor's degree in engineering and a master's degree in geology from the University of California at Davis, as well as a Ph.D. in hydrology from the University of Nevada at Reno. He literally traveled around the globe, and spent time as a student, adventurer, and research scientist on the ice fields of Alaska, Greenland, and Antarctica. This man never met a ski slope he didn't conquer and rarely passed up an opportunity to ride his road bike up and down hills that would give the carburetor in a 4-cylinder sedan pause. In addition to his intense relationship with the outdoors, Gregg also gave much to his relationships with those whose lives he inspired and influenced as a son, brother, husband, uncle, colleague, and friend. According to his buddies, someone reported they saw him purchasing a season pass at Kirkwood at 6:32 a.m. January 6, 2009. We'll see you there, Gregg.

Gregg is survived by his wife, Kerri Lamorey of Carson City; mother, Patricia Lamorey of Roseville, Calif.; sister Suzanne Lamorey and niece Maggie Lamorey of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, Chris Lamorey (wife Traci) and nephew Buddy Lamorey of Placerville, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his father, Will Lamorey, in 2004; and his first wife, Susan Woodin, in 2005.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, P.O. Box 130819 of Houston, Texas 77219-0819, online at livestrong.org or by phone at (512) 236-8820.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, January 31, 2009, at the Ranch House in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra, Reno, Nevada.
