The three-year old daughter of Doc Stephens of Sutro died of diphtheria. Three other children and Ms. Stephens are also afflicted. Everything possible is being done for the sick ones and hopes of their recovery is entertained. Chronicle.

Austin, Nevada gets the first outside telephone connection. The first telegraph line was brought into Austin in 1860 and "... while the telephone is a great improvement, it seemed like the passing of an old friend when the telegraph was taken out," according to J. M. Hiskey, General Manager of the Nevada Central and resident of Austin for 35 years.

A series of earthquakes have been hitting Virginia City causing many foundation cracks and causing the town's post office parking lot's 20-foot retaining wall to crack and crumble.

A strong series of earthquakes hit the Nevada Test Site, tipping over files and knocking pictures from walls. The test jolt was a magnitude 4.7 and struck the Frenchman Flat. The earthquake occurred 35 miles from Yucca Mountain targeted as the site of the nation's first nuclear waste dump.
