Mims edges Wicker for state golf title

RENO - Galena High's Andrew Mims shot a 3-over-par 147 to win the Level 3 15-17 Nevada State Junior Amateur Championship at Washoe Golf Club Tuesday afternoon.

Mims opened with a 5-over-par 77 and then bounced back with a 2-under-par 70 to edge Douglas High's Thomas Wicker by two shots. Wicker shot a 78 and 71.

Connor Sullivan and Nick Roman tied for third at 151, while Matt Vanderbeek was fifth at 153. Greg Kerber, Jacob Nelson and Tyler Spitler tied for sixth at 154.

In the girls' 15-17 age group, Katelyn Wright shot a two-round total of 150, 12 shots better than Douglas' Bethany Wurster.

In boys 13-14, Julius Lorentzen won the boys 13-14 with a two-round total of 154. Anthony Decker was second with a 166 and David Tottori was third with a 168.

Anne Freeman and Brianna Becker tied for the 13-14 girls title at 160.

Carson Hooligans eliminated

The Carson City Hooligans all-star team lost 12-1 Tuesday to Reno National to end its season in the District 1 tournament.

Their only run came on a passed ball that brought Tyler Lethcoe home.

The Hooligans lost their two previous games - 5-4 to Sparks Centennial and 16-5 to Reno Continental - coming into the elimination game.

Sosas qualified for

regional event

Three local track and field athletes have earned a trip to the Junior Olympics regional championships on July 10 in Bakersfield, Calif.

Athletes who placed in the top eight in their respective events at the regional level - Northern Nevada's regional was held in Livermore, Calif., over the weekend - advanced to the regional competition where they must place in the top three to move on to the Junior Olympics.

Erika Sosa, a sophomore at Carson High School, placed in the 3,000-meter and in the 1,500, both in the Intermediate Division.

Erika's sister, Blanca Sosa, placed third in the 1,500 and eighth in the 800 in the Bantam Division.

Also, Sabrina Ronato of Eagle Valley Middle School placed seventh in both the discus and and javelin in the Bantam Division.
