UPDATE 4:20: Crews getting handle on Topaz fire

4:20 p.m.

Eastfork Fire Capt. Terry Taylor, said a fire burning in Topaz Ranch Estates is 50 percent contained. Full containment is expected by this evening.

Fifteen to 20 acres were burned in the fire that began about 2:45 p.m. in the 3600 block of Granite Way.

"No more evacuations are needed and no addtional strutures threatened," he said.

Strike teams from Reno and Sparks have been cancelled.

The cause is not known at this point.

Fire crews appear to be getting a handle on a wildland fire in Topaz Ranch Estates that was threatening homes.

Eastfork Fire Capt. Terry Taylor said a bomber is dropping slurry on the site and a Type 1 fire crew that was ordered, has been cancelled.

Topaz Ranch Estates residents are evacuating in the face of a wildfire climbing the ridge between Topaz Ranch Estates and Holbrook.

Heavy fire tankers are on the way to the southern Douglas County community, about eight miles south of Gardnerville.

East Fork firefighters are being assisted by Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators. A helicopter, a heavy tanker and a half-dozen brush trucks are on their way to the fire, which started at about 2:46 p.m.

Deputies have cleared all of the homes on Breccia Road in the Topaz Ranch Estates as afternoon winds whip a wildland fire dangerously close to structures.

Eastfork Fire Captain Terry Taylor said that at 3:30 p.m. the fire was estimated at six to seven acres.

"It's windier there than it is here," said Taylor as he made his way from a meeting in Lake Tahoe to Gardnerville where he will organize assistance.

Taylor said mutal aid from Lyon County and Mono County have been called in to assist and bomber will likely be ordered to dump fire retardant on the area.

A command post has been set up at Granite Way and Sandstone Drive.

TOPAZ - Residents are being evacuated from an area around the 3300 block of Granite Way in Topaz Ranch Estates for a wildland fire.

The fire is reportedly heading uphill, and traffic officers and Search and Rescue members are being called in to assist with evacuations.

At this point, reports indicate no structures have been damaged.
