If you can't beat the heat this weekend rock out to it instead with local band Ride On.

The three-piece band will be performing a free concert from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the gazebo at James Lee Park in Indian Hills.

The cover band's play list includes classic rock hits such as Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama," "Moondance" by Van Morrison, "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash, "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Good," as well as current favorites like Kenny Chesney's "Sun Goes Down."

The local band has played in the area for several years, including shows at Carson City's Casino Fandango, on the Tahoe Queen at Lake Tahoe and at Carson Valley's annual Candy Dance festival, according to the band's bass guitarist Don Helwig.

Ride On also features lead singer and guitarist Scott Foster, a former member of the Dane Rinehart Band, and drummer Dean Brownell. Foster and Brownell also are known from their days with the Fabulous Cut Ups, another local band that used to play at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Reno's Boomtown and other local venues, Helwig said.

Helwig, who lives in Gardnerville, and Brownell, a Fallon native, are locals while guitarist Foster moved to the area from back east.

"Scott lives here now, but he's originally a southern boy from Florida," Helwig said.

The two-hour outdoor concert is sponsored by the Indian Hills Recreation Department, which suggests concert goers bring chairs and a picnic. Wine and beer will be on sale at the park, which is off Mica Drive in Carson Valley.

A second concert featuring Hired Gunz, another three-piece classic rock cover band, is scheduled at the park on Sept. 5 from 6 to 10 p.m., said Sandi Eisele, district analyst, community and human resources at the Indian Hills Recreation Department. That concert, which will take place on the park's baseball field, will also feature a barbecue.

The Indian Hills Recreation Department has been sponsoring summer concerts at the park since 2003. For more information, contact the department at 267-2805.
