It was a tough day for the Nevada Bighorns summer college baseball team which dropped a doubleheader against the Redding Colt 45s on Saturday at John L. Harvey Field.
The Bighorns lost the opener 11-3 and the nightcap 6-1.
The Bighorns fell to 6-14 in the West Coast League Tri-State while Redding improved to 11-11. The two teams will play again at 11 a.m. Sunday at John L. Harvey Field.
In the opener, Jesse Rasner allowed five earned runs over five innings. Jeff Young hit a three-run home run to pull the Bighorns to within 4-3 in the third inning.
But Redding scored three runs over the next two innings, two of them unearned, to take a 7-3 lead. Redding then scored four runs in the sixth to break the game open.
Mike Stiles had three hits, including a double, Eric Maupin had two hits, including a double, and Shane Kockenmeister added a hit for the Bighorns.
Jeremy Gendlek pitched well for the Bighorns in the nightcap, but was the victim of bad luck. Gendlek was touched for three runs in the third on the strength of an infield single and a pop fly in shallow left center field that ended up as a two-run double.
Another pop fly that went for a two-run double gave Redding a 5-0 lead in the fourth. Gendlek allowed four earned runs over five innings.
Blake Nahlem allowed one run over the last two innings. Matt Winter hit a homer in the sixth inning to provide the Bighorns' only run.
It looked like the Bighorns had closed to within 5-1 in the fourth after Royal Good led off with a groundrule double that bounced over the right center field fence. Maupin eventually singled and it looked like Good slid under the tag at home on the play, but was ruled out to end the inning.
Sam Feiner and Kockenmeister also both doubled for the Bighorns. Dayne Quist pitched a complete-game five hitting for Redding.
