The Public Utilities Commission has set a Monday hearing to give the public a chance to comment on Southwest Gas applications to raise rates in northern Nevada.

The first application seeks a 1.1 percent increase to generate $1.7 million. That would cost the average customer in the Carson City area about $1.77 a month in the winter, 83 cents in the summer.

The second application seeks $9.48 million to cover the increased costs of purchased fuel. If granted, a PUC spokesman said that would cost the residential customer $10.66 a month for 100 therms of gas in the winter but just $2.77 a month for the average 26 therm user in the summer.

The hearing begins at 6 p.m. Monday, July 27 in the PUC's hearing room A, 1150 East William St., Carson City.
