Consumer sessions are scheduled in July and hearings before the Public Utilities Commission in September on Southwest Gas Corporation's request for a rate increase.
The northern division increase across all customer classes is just 1.1 percent, which would generate about $1.7 million in additional revenue. The southern Nevada request is 5.9 percent and would produce $28.8 million.
In its application, the utility advised the PUC its existing rates don't provide enough revenue to produce "a fair and reasonable return" on its investment. Company officials cited costs of capital, increased expenses from capital investment and rising wages and benefits as well as changes in customer usage.
For the average single family residence in the north, the increase would amount to 83 cents a month in the summer, $1.77 in the winter. That would set the average monthly bill at $42.07 in the summer and $134.15 in the winter.
Consumer briefing and comment sessions are set for July 16 in Las Vegas and July 27 in the north.
Hearings on the proposed rate hikes are scheduled to start Sept. 8.
