Wild Horse to offer intensive theater workshops for children

Wild Horse Academy of the Arts is offering three intensive theater workshops Aug. 10-14 at Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. For reservations or more information, call 887-0438. The three programs for different age groups are:

• Broadway Kids for ages 9-12: 10 a.m.-noon, $75 for the week. This workshop is all about kids in the spotlight. Basic performance skills for the young actor using material from kid favorites such as "High School Musical," "Grease" and "Hairspray" will be featured. In addition to working on group musical theatre numbers, they will also work on improvisation skills, movement, solo performance, and scene work. Songs and scenes will be provided and the workshop will culminate in a performance showcase for parents and friends.

• Where the Wild Things Are! workshop for ages 6-8: 9-10 a.m., $50. Covers acting, dance and singing; exploring and introducing the theater arts through storytelling, creative movement and the use of imagination. Kids will learn basic improvisation and performance skills while finding their inner wild animal. We also will be crafting our own props and costumes to bring our characters to life. The week will culminate in a performance showcase.

• Advanced Musical Theater workshop for ages 13-20: 1-4 p.m., $125. (Younger, advanced students by audition only). Theater-intensive workshop to focus on a number of important aspects of theater training and performance. Classes will include improvisation games culminating in a performance of Improv Olympics, voice and speech for the stage, based on the Linklater technique for free, strong, and clear voices. Students will have the opportunity to work on solo monologues and scene work with a partner, as well as solo and group musical theater numbers. Some monologues, songs, and scenes will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring in pieces of their own choosing as well.
