Seatbelt bill passes Senate

The legislation to allow police to stop an vehicle if they don't think the driver is wearing a seatbelt cleared the Senate Monday.

The original version of the bill died in the Assembly. But sponsor Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, resurrected it by attaching it to SB433 which required hospitals in Clark and Washoe counties outpatient cancer treatment as part of their care for indigents.

then the cancer language was removed from the bill.

Nolan has argued if police can stop some one for not wearing a seatbelt, they will reduce serious injuries and deaths.

Opponents argue it just gives police the power to stop anyone without having a valid reason for doing so.

Since the Assembly already killed the idea once, it's fate in the Assembly wasn't very bright.
