The Nevada Senate Monday failed to override the governor's veto of AB458.

Speaker Barbara Buckley, D-Las Vegas, introduced the bill creating a rainy day fond for public education. The legislation not only creates the fund but gives it top priority for reversions.

Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, led the 12-9 party line vote blocking the override. He said the fund is a goal which should be encouraged. But he objected to the fact the bill gives precedence to the education fund over the existing rainy day fund for general state uses " including education shortfalls.

Raggio said the first goal of the state in this economy should be to put money into the general fund stabilization account.
