Lyon County will likely remodel or replace its jail in Yerington rather than construct a new public safety building in Dayton Valley, according to county officials.
County commissioners will look at what jail project they want at their meeting today.
Earlier this year commissioners discussed the possibility of building a public safety building including a new jail, court and police services on donated land in Dayton Valley. Some commissioners had said Silver Springs would be a better place for the building because of its central location in the county.
The county might eventually look at building a complex with some county services on the donated Dayton Valley land, said County Manager Dennis Stark. The county's only "viable" options for a jail are to remodel the existing Yerington jail or replace it, he said.
The county estimated a new public safety building in Dayton Valley would cost $37.5 million.
"The economy doesn't make that possible now," Stark said.
Sheriff Allen Veil said the current 54-bed jail has many problems. It is overcrowded and possibly structurally unsound, he said. Its security doors, electrical system and sprinklers need to be upgraded, he said.
"There's a potential we'll have to bulldoze the whole thing because it's not feasible for remodel," he said.
