AL roundup: Rays torch Yankees' Rivera for 9-7 win

NEW YORK (AP) - Joe Dillon hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays touched up Mariano Rivera for the second time this season, defeating the New York Yankees 9-7 on Saturday.

David Price left with a chance to beat CC Sabathia in a much-anticipated matchup pitting a potential ace against an established one. But the Yankees rallied for two runs in the eighth, tying it 5-all against Tampa Bay's bullpen.

Willy Aybar and Ben Zobrist homered to help the AL champion Rays overcome four errors, which doubled their previous season high. Three were throwing errors by All-Star catcher Dioner Navarro.

J.P. Howell (1-2) earned the win and ex-Yankee Randy Choate got one out for his third save.

The Rays have won four straight and six of seven. They are 3-0 at the new Yankee Stadium, including an 8-6 victory May 7 when Rivera (0-2) served up back-to-back homers for the first time in his career. Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria connected for ninth-inning solo shots in that one.

Mark Teixeira homered in the eighth and hit a two-run double in the ninth for New York. Alex Rodriguez also went deep for the Yankees.

Mariners 2, Twins 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Ken Griffey Jr. drove in Ichiro Suzuki with a two-out double in the eighth, leading Seattle to the victory.

A day after his club-record 27-game hitting streak ended, Suzuki went 3 for 4 against the Twins, including a two-out RBI double in the fifth that tied it at 1.

Suzuki also sparked Seattle's winning rally in the eighth, chopping a leadoff single over the head of left-hander Sean Henn (0-1). Russell Branyan struck out and Adrian Beltre popped up before Griffey came up with his tiebreaking hit.

Chris Jakubauskas (4-5) got two outs in the eighth to earn the win for the Mariners, who improved to 15-12 in a major league-high 27 one-run games this season. David Aardsma worked the ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances.

White Sox 4, Indians 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Josh Fields homered and Gavin Floyd pitched into the seventh inning, helping the White Sox end a four-game skid.

Paul Konerko had a sacrifice fly in the first to end Chicago's scoreless drought at 23 innings.

Floyd (4-5) allowed two runs - one earned - and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Fields put the White Sox ahead with a two-out solo shot in the fourth inning. It was his third homer of the season and first since May 5 at Kansas City.

Bobby Jenks pitched a scoreless ninth for his 13th save in 14 opportunities.

Indians starter Jeremy Sowers (1-3) allowed three runs - two earned - and five hits in six innings.

Royals 6, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO (AP) - Luke Hochevar worked a season-high 6 2-3 innings, Willie Bloomquist hit a three-run triple and Kansas City ended an eight-game losing streak.

Mark Teahen homered and drove in three runs for the Royals, who earned their first win since a 6-1 victory over Detroit on May 26.

Called up from Triple-A Omaha to make the start, Hochevar (1-2) won for the first time since July 11, 2008. He allowed two runs and four hits.

Scott Richmond (4-3) allowed five runs and five hits in 4 2-3 innings for Toronto. He dropped to 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA in his last six games, five starts.

Raul Chavez hit a two-run homer for Toronto.

Red Sox 8, Rangers 1

BOSTON (AP) - Jon Lester retired the first 19 batters he faced and finished with a two-hitter, David Oritz homered and the Red Sox beat Texas.

Michael Young doubled into the gap in left-center with one out in the seventh inning to break up Lester's bid for a perfect game. Young also singled in the ninth.

Oritz, mired in a season-long slump, connected for the second time this season and first since May 20. Mike Lowell also homered - after having his double overturned by video review.

Lester (5-5), the club's most reliable postseason pitcher last year when he threw a no-hitter on May 19 against Kansas City, struck out 11 and walked two. It was his third career complete game.

Derek Holland (1-3) took the loss.

Tigers 2, Angels 1

DETROIT (AP) - Edwin Jackson threw a four-hitter for his second career complete game and the Tigers ended a four-game skid.

Jackson (6-3) improved to 5-1 with a 0.76 ERA in his last six starts. He struck out five and walked one, throwing 109 pitches.

Kelvim Escobar (0-1) went five innings for the Angels in his first start since 2007, allowing two runs and four hits. The right-hander missed all of last year after elbow surgery.
