Rays overpower Rockies

DENVER (AP) - Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and the Tampa Bay Rays powered their way past Colorado 12-4 Tuesday night, snapping the Rockies' 11-game winning streak with a franchise-best 11 extra-base hits.

Longoria and Pena hit two of the Rays' five homers. Gabe Kapler, Ben Zobrist and B.J. Upton also homered.

Colorado's winning streak was tied with Boston for the longest in the majors this season and also tied for the longest in Rockies' history, matching the mark set during their 21-1 run to the 2007 World Series.

The Rays won their sixth straight and right-hander Jeff Niemann (6-4) benefited from the offensive outburst.

Niemann (6-4) allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits and two walks in five innings in his first career start against the Rockies, who lost for the first time since June 3 at Houston.

Colorado is 13-5 under manager Jim Tracy, who replaced Clint Hurdle after an 18-28 start.

Jorge De La Rosa (2-7) was tagged for seven earned runs on eight hits in just 2 1-3 innings.

Red Sox 8, Marlins 2

BOSTON (AP) - David Ortiz homered to start a six-run inning, then added a two-run single to finish it for Boston.

Tim Wakefield (9-3) allowed two runs in six innings to improve to 6-0 at Fenway Park this season.

Chris Volstad (4-7) allowed nine hits and a career-high eight runs before he was chased in the fourth, when the Red Sox sent 11 batters to the plate. It was his fourth consecutive loss.

Ortiz, who did not homer in the first six weeks of the season, now has five for the year - four of them in the last nine games. His batting average is back up to .210 - still 73 points below his career average.

Mets 6, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE - Three Orioles' errors led to three tainted Mets runs, helping Mike Pelfrey earn his first win in more than five weeks.

New York had lost eight of 12, including two of three to the hated Yankees over the weekend. In the first game, Mets second baseman Luis Castillo dropped a popup that enabled the Yankees to score the winning runs in the ninth inning.

Pelfrey (5-2) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings. The right-hander had gone 0-2 in six starts since defeating Philadelphia on May 7.

Francisco Rodriguez gave up a bases-loaded walk to Ty Wigginton and a run-scoring groundout to Brian Roberts in the ninth, then struck out Adam Jones with two runners in scoring position for his 17th save in 18 opportunities.

Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie (4-7) permitted five runs in 6 1-3 innings.

Yankees 5, Nationals 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Robinson Cano hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh inning and matched a career high with four hits, leading CC Sabathia to a victory.

Sabathia (6-4) held Washington in check after light-hitting Anderson Hernandez's three-run homer in the fifth gave the Nationals the lead. The 6-foot-7 left-hander departed after walking Nick Johnson with two outs in the eighth inning and received a standing ovation.

Brian Bruney, activated off the disabled list earlier in the day, got Ryan Zimmerman to ground out and Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances.

Shairon Martis allowed four hits and one earned run before handing a 3-2 lead over to the Nationals bullpen. Ron Villone (3-4) took the loss.

Brewers 7, Indians 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Yovani Gallardo won for the third time in four starts, despite walking a season-high six.

Gallardo (7-3) gave up two runs and five hits while striking out eight. He twice worked out of bases-loaded jams.

The Indians went hitless in 14 tries with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners stranded overall until Travis Hafner hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth to make it 7-5.

J.J. Hardy had two hits and two RBIs for Milwaukee.

Cleveland starter Jeremy Sowers (1-4) gave up three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. The left-hander struck out two.

Rangers 6, Astros 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Ian Kinsler homered twice and Texas beat Houston as the Astros' Ivan Rodriguez matched the major league record for games caught.

Rodriguez, who began his career at age 19 in 1991 and played 12 seasons in Texas, homered for the Astros. It was his 2,226th career game behind the plate to tie Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk.

Kinsler, 4 for 33 with no RBIs the previous eight games, put the Rangers ahead to stay with his fourth leadoff homer this season. He added another solo shot in the second off slumping left-hander Wandy Rodriguez (5-6).

Kevin Millwood (7-4) worked seven innings, allowing one run to win his third straight start.

Cardinals 11, Tigers 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Albert Pujols hit his fifth home run in five games - and the longest homer at Busch Stadium this season - and St. Louis routed Detroit and ace Justin Verlander.

Adam Wainwright (7-4) worked seven strong innings for the Cardinals.

Pujols also drew his major league-leading 19th and 20th intentional walks in only semi-threatening situations before lining his 23rd homer an estimated 446 feet over the left field wall off Ryan Perry to start the sixth. Chris Duncan followed with a 418-foot shot that gave the light-hitting Cardinals back-to-back homers for the first time all season.

Verlander (7-3) lasted four innings in the Tigers' first game in St. Louis since losing the clinching Game 5 of the 2006 World Series.

Angels 8, Giants 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mike Napoli had a three-run homer among his four hits, pitcher Sean O'Sullivan won his major league debut, and Los Angeles won its season-best fifth straight game.

O'Sullivan (1-0) was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake to make the start after the Angels scratched Ervin Santana because of a strain below his pitching elbow in the forearm area. O'Sullivan allowed five hits and one run, struck out five and walked one in seven strong innings. He also hit an infield single leading off the fourth for his first big league hit.

The Angels' first three hits off Jonathan Sanchez (2-7) were doubles, including one by Juan Rivera that put Los Angeles ahead for good in the first.

Royals 5, Diamondbacks 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gil Meche pitched a four-hit shutout and Mark Teahen had three hits and drove in a run for Kansas City.

Meche's shutout was the second of his career. His other came on Sept. 12, 2004 against Boston while with Seattle. It was his first complete game since Sept. 24, 2007, a 3-2 loss at Baltimore.

Meche (4-5) improved to 14-4 in interleague play. His .778 winning percentage against the National League tops all active pitchers with at least 20 interleague starts.

Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis (3-8), who is 1-5 in his past nine starts, left after 5 2-3 innings, allowing four runs and six hits. He walked three and struck out five. Twins 8, Pirates 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Glen Perkins won his first start off the disabled list and Joe Mauer backed him with his second four-hit game of the season for Minnesota.

Perkins (2-3) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings, striking out four and walking one to win for the first time in seven starts since defeating the Los Angeles Angels on April 19. Perkins had been on the disabled list since May 19 because of left elbow inflammation,

Minnesota had 16 hits and improved its interleague record this year to 6-1.

Paul Maholm (4-3) have up eight runs and a career-high 14 hits in five innings, and he threw two wild pitches.

Mariners 5, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Felix Hernandez pitched a two-hitter and Seattle handed San Diego a record-setting 12th straight interleague loss.

Franklin Gutierrez and Adrian Beltre each hit solo homers for the only offense Hernandez would need as he threw his third career shutout and sixth career complete game.

Hernandez (7-3) struck out six and walked three.

San Diego set a major-league record with its 12th straight loss in interleague play to snap a tie with the New York Mets. The Padres have lost four straight interleague games this season and last won in 2007. San Diego is 5-22 in interleague games since June 20, 2007.

Kevin Correia (3-5) had won his previous two starts but the two home runs he allowed were too much to overcome.

National League

CINCINNATI (AP) - Laynce Nix drove in three runs Tuesday night, and Brandon Phillips had three hits on a soggy field, helping Cincinnati Reds overcome a couple of rain delays and end a four-game losing streak.

Nix drove in runs with a groundout and a pair of doubles, the last one during a four-run eighth inning. He also finished with three hits.

Left-hander Daniel Ray Herrera (1-2) got his first major league victory, pitching three scoreless innings after a 1-hour, 54-minute delay forced starter Aaron Harang out of the game in the third inning. Braves starter Jair Jurrjens (5-5) went only two innings before the rain ended his performance, too.
