A woman shot and left for dead last week along the Carson River filed a restraining order in February 2008 against the man police say tried to kill her.
According to the document filed on Feb. 6, 2008, victim Ashley Fortune, 21, alleged that Miguel Barajas-Zarate, 31, said "he was going to shoot me" and left messages "saying he was going to follow me to find out where I lived so he could smash my car up."
She described Barajas-Zarate as an acquaintance.
According to the Application for Order For Protection Against Stalking, Aggravated Stalking or Harassment signed by Fortune and filed in Carson City Justice Court, the dispute centered around a rental car Fortune secured for Zarate after he damaged his vehicle in an accident. Justice of the Peace Robey Willis signed the order that day.
But less than 24 hours after she first asked for the protection, Fortune returned to the courthouse and filed a motion to dissolve the order on Feb. 7, 2008.
"Things were worked out between me and the adverse party. I don't feel he is a threat anymore," Fortune wrote.
On Friday a man at the Carson River off Brunswick Canyon Road found Fortune covered in blood and hunched over in the brush along the river.
She'd suffered a gunshot wound in the side and had been beaten in the head with a large rock, according to investigators.
Fortune told police Barajas-Zarate called her and asked her to drive him to the river to dump tires. Once out there, he allegedly shot her in the back, then beat her with a rock when his weapon jammed.
Fortune said Barajas-Zarate believed she had stolen from him. He then fled the area in Fortune's 1999 red Crown Victoria.
Fortune is recovering from her injuries in a Reno hospital.
