The Tribune Co. is working toward a deal to sell the Chicago Cubs to a Nebraska investor but now the company says it is also "assessing other alternatives."

Tribune says it has a responsibility to pursue a deal that's in the company's best interests.

The lead bidder has been Omaha, Neb., businessman Tom Ricketts, whose family has offered nearly $900 million for the Cubs. Tribune says it is still talking to the Ricketts family with the goal of making a deal.

Ricketts spokesman Dennis Culloton says talks are moving positively and most of the pieces for a deal are in place.

One of the other potential bidders is Marc Utay of Clarion Capital. He declined to say whether he's involved in talks for the Cubs.
