LAS VEGAS - Nevada is going after the property and assets of people convicted of trafficking in child prostitutes.
Gov. Jim Gibbons held a ceremony Monday in Las Vegas to highlight a law that becomes effective Oct. 1. Proponents say it'll give Nevada some of the strictest child prostitution laws in the country.
It lets authorities freeze and seize assets of those involved in child prostitution, and allows for fines of up to $500,000 for trafficking in prostitutes younger than 14, and $100,000 for trafficking in prostitutes ages 14 to 17.
The measure unanimously passed the Legislature, and Gibbons signed it May 22.
Lawmakers were told that Las Vegas police handled 150 cases of child prostitution last year.
