Farmers market starts Saturday morning

The Saturday Morning 3rd & Curry St. Farmers Market kicks off the season Saturday featuring the fresh produce you expect at a farmers market plus baked goods, restaurant fare, cooking demonstrations, music, handmade crafts, fresh flowers, children's pop-up park and carriage rides.

The market runs from

9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Third and Curry streets and will continue every Saturday morning until Oct. 3.

The market season kicks off with 30-plus vendors, which will increase as more produce comes into season. Organic produce also is available.

Nine Nevada farmers will be at the first market, increasing to 11 in a few weeks, said Linda Marrone, market manager.

"I have 11 Nevada farmers," she said. "No other market in the state of Nevada can say that - in the whole state."

Entertainers for the Saturday market begin with Shepherd Darquea on keyboard. He also will play Aug. 15, 22 and Sept 19. Other musicians scheduled are The Hot Two Plus One on July 4, 25, Aug. 22 and Sept. 12; Hick'ry Switch Band Aug. 1; Red Rose July 11, Aug. 15 and Sept. 5; Me & Bobby McGee on Sept. 26; and Ricky D on July 18 and Aug. 29.

Restaurants that will serve food include Adele's and Molly's Catering, with tables in the shade for comfortable places to relax, linger and enjoy the music.

"You can sit and have a bite to eat and shoot the breeze with friends," Marrone said.

The Family Pop Up Park will be set up at the Brewery Arts Center this year, several blocks closer to the farmers market than last year. For those who don't want to walk the three blocks, Hoofbeats will provide carriage rides between sites.

Muscle Powered will be providing a bicycle valet again this year. Volunteers from Muscle Powered will park and watch your bike while you roam the market.

The market organizers also encourage recycling and using reusable bags. Those who forget their bags can buy bags donated by Trader Joe's, which will sell for $1 apiece with the proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Club.
