(Continued from yesterday) "Stop!" again cried the voice from the rocks. At the same time two other men had risen if by magic, and joined the first. All this time the team kept moving, and had but about 40 feet to reach the summit of the pitch and get to a level road. The wind was blowing at a fevered rate, and the men were at such a distance that only faintly was heard the cry, "Is that the Bodie Stage?" Byrne sent the horses on at a rushing gait, sending the stage to the valley under sky and starlight.

The Sagebrush Club will give a smoker for members tomorrow night. A program and a feed are being arranged. As long as no one tries to sing, the members will have a good time. Judge Norcross is to be forbidden from going near the piano. Nobe is busy getting ready.

Progress of "Brown's wrecking crew" is under close observation as preliminary work is being done for the installation of Carson's white way on Main Street. First in order was making holes in the cement sidewalks for light standard bases.

50 years ago

The Highway 50 Wagon Train will leave Virginia City Sunday, stopping overnight in Carson on its way to Placerville. The Indians are on the warpath and are expected to attack the Wagon Train as they circle for the evening stop. Wagons will be burned and the settlers will be scalped. There will be a dance, pit barbecue and other entertainment.

Gov. Bob Miller is seriously considering vetoing a bill that would give legislators a 300 percent increase in retirement benefits.

Gas prices fell 17 cents a gallon in six weeks, ending at $1.37 a gallon, second highest only to San Francisco at $1.38.
