RENO, Nev. (AP) - A baseball autographed by Babe Ruth has fetched $3,900 at auction in Reno.

The ball, signed in 1928, went today to a former University of Nevada, Reno baseball player who asked not to be identified.

The 31-year-old man told the Reno Gazette-Journal that he's an avid baseball memorabilia collector who plans to keep the ball "forever."

The ball had been expected to sell for $3,000 to $5,000.

It was among nearly 500 items offered in an auction of the estate of fantasy author David Eddings of Carson City.
