3 hurt in Hwy. 28 wreck Monday

Three people were injured Monday morning on Highway 28 near the junction with Highway 50 West.

A gold Chrysler mini-van was southbound on Highway 28 when the driver lost control and crossed the center line into the path of a northbound UPS truck driven by Gary Kvasnicka, 52 of Minden, at 10:15 a.m.

The mini-van driver, Manuel Sanchez, 32 of Tahoe Vista, Calif., suffered a serious head injury.

Van passenger Jovani Sanchez, 20, and UPS driver Kvasnicka suffered minor injuries, said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen.

A Care Flight helicopter landed near the park-and-ride lot on Spooner Summit and took both Sanchezes to Renown Regional Medical Center.

Kvasnicka was taken by ambulance to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

BLM says Pickens horse deal is flawed

RENO (AP) " An offer from the wife of Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens to establish a sanctuary for 30,000 wild horses is "problematic" and not viable as proposed, a federal land management official said Monday.

Nonetheless, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is willing to continue talks with Madeleine Pickens, said Ron Wenker, the agency's state director.

"We tried to thank her politely" and leave the door open, he told the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board.

Chester Arthur Stiles' defense lawyers put no witnesses on the stand after prosecutors rested their case, and the 38-year-old Stiles chose not to testify in his trial.

Stiles has pleaded not guilty to 22 felony charges: 10 counts of lewdness with a child under the age of 14; 11 counts of sexual assault with a minor under 14; and one count of attempted sexual assault with a minor under 14.

Twenty-one charges carry sentences of life in prison with the possibility of parole. Nineteen charges stem from acts on the video with a 2-year-old girl.

Galena High School honored for classes

RENO, Nev. (AP) " Galena High School is being honored nationally for it's dedication to Advanced Placement classes.

The school was one of 50 nationally to win the 2009 Siemens State School Award for A-P program that allows the brightest high school students to take classes that include college-level material.

In addition to the award, Galena will receive a $1,000 grant to support science and education.

Officials for the Siemens Foundation say they received a number of extremely strong applicants from the state of Nevada. But they say Galena's commitment to provide students with AP opportunities and the school staff's dedication to student success was evident.
