Senator Square: CHS culinary students bring home the bacon

Two teams from the Carson High School Culinary Arts Program earned honors at the recent Pro Start Competition in Las Vegas.

Taking third place was the Hot Foods Team, consisting of Ariel Heinz, Tyler Loewe, Albert Terpening and Robyn Gowan. The team earned $8,000 in scholarship dollars.

The Management Team, Tracy Morris, Brittany Shirey, Jonathan Kane and Brandon Gray, took first place, earning $16,000 in scholarships. The team also earned an invitation to the national competition in San Diego in April. Students are seeking donations to help fund the trip.

Congratulations also to the Senator Cheerleading Squad, which recently brought home a state title. Carson took first place out of 17 teams in the All-Girl Stunt. The Lady Senators were one of only three teams to be awarded first in the 4A category this year.

The Intermediate Drama Class will be performing the social awareness drama, "Juvie," by Jerome McDonough at the Carson Community Center on Thursday, March 12. Two performances are scheduled at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

The 50-minute production dramatizes teens' issues with crime and subsequent incarceration in juvenile hall.

Admittance is by donation and 50 percent of the proceeds will go to local social services. For more information, call 230-8919.

C-Unity, a group of CHS students who plan fun and exciting activities for other students, is hosting a dance for current eighth graders who will be CHS freshmen in the fall.

The dance will take place at

7 p.m. March 27 in Senator Square. Tickets will be sold on each middle school campus, during eighth-grade orientation, and at the door.

Students in the AutoCAD II and III classes are participating in this year's CANstruction Charity Event at Truckee Meadows Community College on March 31.

Participants are to design and build a structure out of food cans to learn how to apply drafting designs to actual building problems. All cans are donated to the Northern Nevada Food Bank after the competition.

Last year, students used 33,300 pounds of cans, donating the equivalent of 26,640 meals to the Northern Nevada Food Bank.
