Senator boys win 4A swim crown

Nevada Appeal Staff Report

Led by Paul Chang and Kevin Dyer, the Carson High boys swimming team won the 4A zone team title Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Carson finished with 322 points compared to 289 for Reno. Carson lost by two points to the Huskies in the High Desert League meet last week. Manogue was third with 245 points followed by Douglas and Galena at 212 and 186, respectively.

On the girls' side Reno was first with 368 and Douglas was second with 265. Galena was third at 255, Damonte Ranch fourth with 191 and Spanish Springs fifth at 181.

Dyer qualified for this week's state meet at the University of Nevada by finishing second in the 200 free (1:47.16) and winning the 500 free (4:54.91). He also teamed with Jacob Branco, Chang and Jacob Cornwell to win the 400 free relay in 3:14.37.

Chang qualified in both the 50 and 100 free, clocking times of 22.54 and 49.66, respectively.

Diver Kurt Anderson advanced with a score of 338.60, well behind Douglas' Eddie Kollar.

Tim Grunert, one of the mainstays of Carson's team throughout the season missed on his bid for a spot in state. Grunert was fifth in the 200 IM (2:10.34) and fourth in the 100 breast (1:02.99).

Albert Reed, who qualified in the 100 fly and 500 free in Friday's trials, finished out of the money in both events. Cornwell was fifth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 free.

The Carson girls failed to send anybody to state.

Tatum Boehnke was sixth in the 100 fly (1:03.30) and fourth in the 500 free (5:30.46). Jamie Showalter barely missed in the 200 free, clocking a 2:02.09, good for fourth place and taking seventh in the 100 back at 1:05.60. The 200 and 400 free relay squads both finished fifth

NORTHERN NEVADA 3A TRACK

Dayton High, led by Logan Ingersoll and Erika Garcia, will send a large contingent to next week's 3A state meet.

Garcia qualified in the 100 (13.21), the 200 (27.38) and the 400 (1:01.98). Ingersoll will move on in the 800 (2:03.26), triple jump (42-11 3/4) and the high jump (5-10).

Ruben Torrez advanced in the 300 hurdles (41.89) and the 400 (52.42). Matt Aaker moved on in the 110 high hurdles (17.06) and the 300 hurdles (43.78).

Kathie Arias htrew 36-8 1/2 in the shot put and went 121-2 in the discus to easily qualify in both of those events.
