Spring registration begins; new students can register Dec. 7

Area residents will receive the printed version of the Western Nevada College spring class schedule in their mailboxes this week, just in time for the first week of registration for continuing students. Spring semester begins Monday, Jan. 25. New students can register for classes beginning Monday,

Dec. 7.

Enrolling and signing up for classes is easy by clicking on the "Apply Now" link at www.wnc.edu and filling out some basic information. New students are able to sign up for classes three days after submitting their application.

Western offers a full slate of classes leading to an associate or bachelor's degree, and career-oriented classes in business, computer technology, criminal justice, drafting, health fields and more.

'Sounds of Winter' holiday concert on Dec. 8 promises to delight

In what has become a seasonal tradition, WNC's free holiday chorale performance, "Sounds of Winter," will delight young and old with traditional seasonal favorites and, as always, a few surprises. Choirmaster Bill Zabelsky will lead the college chorus on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Aspen Building's Sarah Winnemucca Hall.

Traditional German folk carol "Ring Merry Bells" will be performed, along with Handel's "Awake the Trumpets Lofty Sound" and "I'll be Home for Christmas," performed as a jazz piece. There will be other contemporary winter and holiday music to round out the evening, plus the Douglas High School Madrigals performing a few numbers to begin the concert.

College offers NASA scholarship

WNC is offering two $1,250 scholarships for spring semester to students with an interest in the space program. Students have until Tuesday, Dec. 15, to apply to the NASA/WNC Space Grant scholarship.

The goal of the scholarship is to broaden the pool of qualified applicants for the future workforce.

Meet artists at college gallery reception on Dec. 9

Spend some time enjoying a diverse exhibit of original artwork and meet the creative minds behind the canvases at WNC. The college will host an artist reception Wednesday, Dec. 9, 4:30-6:30 p.m. for three area artists whose work is showing in the Bristlecone Building galleries through Thursday, Jan. 7. The public is invited.

Photography, mixed media and digital art are all on display, created by Tahoe-inspired artist Galen Brown, former WNC student and photographer Claudia Rios and students in Professor Jayna Conkey's digital photography class.

All exhibits are free and may be viewed during normal business hours. Galleries will be closed Dec. 24 to Jan. 3.

Film series ends in Morocco

Western winds up its international film festival Friday, Dec. 4, with "What a Wonderful World," set in Morocco. The stylish film is a new vision of an old culture with a theme that's for mature audiences. It will show at 7 p.m. at Marlette Hall on the Carson City campus. Admission: $3.

The film series promotes cultural awareness, and the independent films have been screened and won awards at festivals around the globe. The series is supported by Nevada Humanities. Information: 445-3222.

Recycle a book; increase literacy around the world

Don't toss out old books you've finished using. Recycle them by dropping them off at a receptacle near the information desk at Western's Bristlecone Building. From there, they'll be forwarded to organizations that donate books to poor populations around the globe.

Literacy is something most Americans take for granted, but for many parts of the world, books are in short supply because of poverty. Being able to read is a precious gift, and Western hopes to improve literacy through its book drive. Books of all types are

welcome.
