Winter slam expected today

So long summer. Hello winter.

After highs in the 90s just a week ago, western and Northern Nevada is bracing for what forecasters say could bring the region's first chance of snow to the valley floors.

The National Weather Service says winds will begin picking up this morning as a trough of low pressure moves into the region. Forecasters predict gusts up to 50 mph in the valleys, and up to 100 mph in the mountains, by afternoon.

Clouds bringing a chance of rain and snow will follow overnight. Snow levels are expected to start out at around the 5,500-foot level before lowering to the valley floors.

Unsettled weather is expected to linger across the region through Monday.

Dave Siegel of South Lake Tahoe was enjoying the sunshine Wednesday at the Bijou Dog Park, but he's looking forward to the cooler days ahead. The Bay Area transplant is hoping this winter will be especially epic.

"I could go for some deep powder. Maybe it will be good for the economy if we do," he said.
