Serendipity ... Maizie was sitting in the Roadrunner Cafe in Dayton last Saturday when she heard someone say, "Maizie." She turned around, but saw no one she knew. On a hunch though, M turned around to ask the people behind her, "Is one of you named Maizie?" The little girl, said, "Yes, I'm Maizie." "How do you spell your name?" "M-A-I-Z-I-E!" "Me, too." The little one eyed her with suspicion, so M pulled out her driver's license and showed her the spelling. It didn't stop there. Her grandparents, Judy and Mike Harris, said her name was Maizie Harris. Deja vu. It ended there, however, they did NOT have the same birth date (especially the year), as Maizie is "almost 7," and the other one will not be - (the typewriter smudged here) 'til July. Both Maizies were pleased they had the same name ... so this goes in the "whoda thunk?" file. And may the cute Maizie Harris have a wonderful birthday next month when she is really 7, and not "almost." What fun.

For those of you who haven't read Sgt. Gary Underhill's columns from Iraq, they should be a must read. He not only keeps us up on the going's on there, but has a great sense of humor as well. And if you're thinking of sending him something, may we suggest towels and good smelling soaps (read his last article on his "shower" that was in the Appeal last week).

Jeff Dunn's funeral was the other day. He was a friend of Carolyn's since the day he was hired at NDOT. She and his co-workers will miss him greatly, for he died much too young. Our sympathy goes out to all his family and friends. Also, today is the day of Roger Maillard's celebration of life at the Brewery Arts Center, from 2-4 p.m. He is greatly missed, too. This week Northern Nevada got another sad message from Afghanistan. Reno's Pfc. Kevin C. Thomson, a former Wooster student, was killed in an attack there. His funeral arrangements are pending.

We are just hating the fact that so many people are out of work, and so many businesses are having difficulties. We just heard that D'Vine Wine will be closing their doors after Nevada Day. They will be open that day to say goodbye to their friends and customers, and will be doing "business as usual" until then. They had good wines, good food, and good entertainment (like Duane "Beans" Souza and Sol Jibe), and we're sorry to see them go.
We would like to say some nice things about some nice people: Thanks to the Rev. Bruce Henderson for being kind to us
in his column; and thanks to
T.J. Saputra for his great party last week. It was delightful. Gratitude also goes out to Kevin from Cavallero's Heating, and to Doyle and Shel at Capital Ford for winterizing M's furnace and car, respectively. And don't forget to winterize your own homes and cars. Now is the time, not when it's 30 below and snowing. We always thank the folks at Adeles, Charlie, Mike, Connie and Steve, for being so nice all the time. Adele's is having their "Festival de Octubre" (a Latin American Octoberfest ... say what?) at 6 p.m. Oct. 22. The cost is $60 with reservations a must (882-3353). A six course dinner paired with all kinds of delightful brews. Sounds delicious.

Happy birthday's go out to Giles Galhaut (of ZBistro fame), Dave Hamlin, Paul Cote, Marlene Pierson and Father Jerry Hanley (older than dirt at last count). May they all have a wonderful day.

Lastly, a definition from E.B. Casteel: "Yurt: Turkish or Russian meaning home or dwelling. 'There's no place like yurt.'" (this is in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz.)
