Innovative media meets natural art

Western Nevada College's fall art exhibit begins Monday, Oct. 19, bringing together stoneware fired with inventive glazes, a digital/mixed media homage to the ancient art of petroglyphs, and inspired pen and ink drawings.

The works will show in the Main Gallery, the College Gallery and the Atrium Gallery in the Bristlecone Building through Thursday, Nov. 19. A public reception for the artists will be Wednesday, Oct. 21, 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Joe Winter's "Pyrotechniques III" is a clever title to describe his use of gas and wood-fired techniques to produce colorful interactions between clay and glaze. Susan Kotler is inspired by natural objects, especially water, rocks and trees, and by reminders of past human presence, such as petroglyphs, that evoke a feeling of mystery and historical connection. Her project is supported with funding from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Artist Jim McCormick's exhibit, "Dark side of the Moon," was inspired by pieces of driftwood he collected in Oregon.

Western's art exhibits are free and may be viewed weekdays, 9 a.m. to

8 p.m., and Saturday,

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Popular film series goes to South America

Western's Friday night series of independent international films is proving popular with students and the general public. With rich backdrops of South American scenery, the upcoming film "Mutum" portrays Thiago, a sensitive and imaginative boy living on a small, hardscrabble farm in a remote region of Brazil. His life is filled not only with curiosity and youthful discovery, but also the reality of his parent's unhappy marriage and his father's abuse - all of which are one day changed by a chance encounter and unexpected gift. "Mutum" plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16 at Marlette Hall on the Carson City campus. Admission: $3. Western students with ID are free.

Designed to promote cultural awareness, the films have been screened and won awards at festivals around the globe. The series is supported by Nevada Humanities. For more information call 445-3222.
