130 YEARS AGO

From the Times-Review: A band of genuine gypsies are traveling down the Humboldt Valley on their way to California. Overshoes and ulsters are in requisition in eastern Nevada, while in Carson we are having summer weather. Reports from the Nevada Central railway are encouraging, and by February the sound of the engine whistle will echo up and down "Pony Canyon."

100 YEARS AGO

Every man, woman and child knows the story of Orrin Becksted, the gray-haired kindly gentleman that is both a Nevada pioneer and veteran of the Mexican War. Becksted has recounted thousands of times what it was like serving under President James K. Polk as the remaining Nevada survivor of that conflict (continued Wednesday).

70 YEARS AGO

The entire University of Nevada freshman football team, with the exception of four players, is composed of Nevada high school graduates. Reno leads with five, followed by Ely with three, Tonopah, with one. Even the coach is from Nevada.

50 YEARS AGO

Burglars broke into the Bandanna Drive-Inn over the weekend and stole $200 from the safe, but left $100 in a cash register. Officer Tony Carter said there was no sign of forced entry.

20 YEARS AGO

The classics were in Carson Sunday as part of the 1,000-mile race of vintage automobiles in the Long Beach to Sparks race.

10 YEARS AGO

Carson City resident Gary Short is being honored by the Nevada Arts council as part of the governor's Millennium Awards in the Arts and humanities.
