130 YEARS AGO

During the past 10 days there have been 13 cases of fever among the children at the Orphan's Home, and at the present time there are nine down with it. Dr. Fox says it's from the water ditch dug some weeks ago that is composed of decomposing vegetable matter which has caused the sickness. The hypothesis is confirmed by the fact that Carson is exempt from the sickness.

100 YEARS AGO

(Continued from Wednesday) With Kit Carson as a guide, Beckstead and the dragoons marched across the desert to Mexico, going five days at times without water and on short rations. In passing through Arizona, they found ranches, burned with the ranchers murdered by Indians. At one point, they found a herd of cattle. When the bulls rushed the soldiers, they shot at the cattle, killing 17 and wounding two soldiers (continued Friday).

70 YEARS AGO

Liechtenstein, the "postage stamp" country of Europe has maintained its neutrality in the carnage of war, but recently has come under attack by Germany in a different way, the 10,000 or so inhabitants that let their cattle graze in German fields have been asked to remain in their own meadows.

50 YEARS AGO

A fumbled scoring drive stopped on the three-yard line ended Carson's hopes of scoring any points against the Elko Indians. The Indians walloped the Senators 33-0.

20 YEARS AGO

A Federal court has put a hold on a reduction of insurance rates until the court has an opportunity to hear eight insurance companies argument against the 15 percent rollback mandated by law.

10 YEARS AGO

Federal Environmental Protection Agency officials said Tuesday that the toxins leaking out of the leviathan mine can probably never be stopped, but they don't think downstream users will be hurt.
