Senior Center costs in line with others

In response to the letter written by Carol A. Lee (about the Yerington Senior Center), you are right, we are having a membership drive. But it's a fundraiser for the senior center. It is not mandatory that all members contribute to the membership drive.

This is strictly a volunteer drive, and a suggested contribution of $20 a year works out to be 5 cents a day. And you can participate in all the activities at the center now and always.

It is true, there is a suggested volunteer contribution of $2.50 for a meal, but we have a five-course sit-down meal. There are volunteers that serve you your meal. Most of the other centers have a buffet-style setting.

Ms. Lee, you mentioned trips that cost $10. Again, you are right. Most of those go to Reno for doctors' appointments. We have a suggested volunteer contribution of $10 for one person going to Reno. The more people that sign up for the trip, the cheaper it is. There is also a van that takes people around Yerington for doctor appointments, shopping, to the post office, or any place they have to go, and it costs $2.

The members that have contributed to the membership drive have done so on their own, to help raise money for the senior center.

I do not think we are out of line compared to other centers, but I would like to thank you for your comments.

Better use of city money than ice skating rink

As I was reading the Nevada Appeal article on the ice skating rink that will re-open this year, I became upset, and even more annoyed, with the reality of the situation. It is going to cost roughly $262,000 to build and re-open the rink, yet the incoming revenue is only $127,000.

Those in charge of opening the rink expect the city to pay off the ice skating rink. We need a lot more in Carson City than an ice skating rink, such as more funding for public safety or other family activities that will not dip into the city's funding.

I'm 19 years old, and although an ice skating rink seems like a lot of fun, it's not worth the cost. We need to spend our money wisely considering we're still in a recession.

Irony lost on letter writer

Regarding Charles Knapp's letter accusing the left of hypocrisy, tell me why it was necessary to mention the race of a gun-toting right-winger peacefully armed at a town hall? And tell me, by the way, what happened to folks in Bush's world who sported an anti-war bumper sticker or T-shirt at a presidential speaking event? And what do you think would have happened had anyone shown up carrying heat?

Death panels. Get over it. Instead of bleating on about poor maligned Sarah Palin and changed language or dropped language in the bill, why don't you attempt to quote the actual, original language, which simply afforded payment of a consultation with a physician - not a politician - concerning living wills, and which was initiated by a GOP member of the House?

I wish fanatic right-wingers were capable of understanding irony. You'd finally know why we're laughing.
