130 YEARS AGO

She Would But She Couldn't: A warrant was issued for the arrest of opium smoker Ellen Grammar, who was in company of the two other girls at Ah Luk's opium den, but she skipped to Virginia. She quietly came down Monday and secreted herself in one of the many banios in the city and decided to go to Bodie incognito. Deputy Sheriff Powers found her and had her go before Judge Cary where she pleaded guilty and was fined $20. Ellen probably won't smoke any more opium in Carson.

100 YEARS AGO

All along the west boundaries of the valley are cars carrying two or more hunters each, all eager to "take to the brush" as soon as it is light to get a buck fattened in the mountains between here and Tahoe. Roads into and through the mountains carried dozens if not hundreds of hunters to favorite hunting spots. Stanley Peyton was the only one so far to have his tag validated by Sheriff Austin.

The first well to be sunk by Churchill Drilling Corpor-

ation today hit oil. The well is capable of pumping 12 to 15 barrels a day and is located on the Happy Valley ranch site. Oil and natural gas came to the surface according to reports.

Carson City High Principal Dr. Patricia A. Haller has announced that Cynthia Betts, Pamela Brigham and Paul Forman have been named Commended students in the 1990 National Merit Scholarship program. They were noted as being in the top five percent of more than 1 million students in taking the PSAT/NMSQT tests.

Cameron Byrd of the band Mindframe sang at the Children's Museum Friday night to benefit Race for The Cure.
