130 YEARS AGO

The Carson Theater was sold yesterday at a Sheriff's sale to satisfy the mortgages of the mortgagors. It was bid by George B. Hill, cashier of the bank for $3,386 for the bank. The former owner has six months to redeem the property. At present there are 13 prisoners in the jail, one of which is Jones, a United States prisoner. Another is awaiting a second trial on a charge of murder. The remaining 11 show three for petit larceny, three for burglary, four for vagrancy and one for assault and battery.

100 YEARS AGO

Charles F. Cutts and James Grant of this city write us from Japan on their round-the-world trip on their stay in Hawaii. "We were brought many loads of many colored leis of sweet flowers, which soon hung about the necks or decorated the hats of passengers. Other boats were filled with sweet singers who sang to us charming songs in their native tongue. How happy we were to stand upon American soil once more (Hawaii at that time was a territory)."

70 YEARS AGO

The government's food stamp program may be tried in Reno and Carson City.

50 YEARS AGO

Nevada state park commission employees from all over Nevada met in Carson City to discuss operating problems prior to the 1960 summer season. "We expect to provide outdoor recreation opportunities to more than 300,000 people in 1960," said director William J. Hart.

20 YEARS AGO

Americans are smoking less than any time since 1942, but cigarette sales have increased in Nevada where the lung cancer rate is among the highest in the nation.

10 YEARS AGO

A Smith Valley 5th grader has won the 2000 Nevada Arbor Day Poster Contest with his entry: "Trees are Terrific ... in all shapes and sizes."
