The Nevada Appeal's "Silver Dollar" and "Wooden Nickel" feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.
Silver Dollar: To Carson City, for embracing two of our own who have fallen on hard times. After an article appeared in the Nevada Appeal on Kurt and Trilby Cunningham, who were driven to panhandling to support themselves and their son, Carson City leaped into action. Calls came pouring in, offering handyman and housekeeping work, money and food. The donations have given the Cunninghams a little cushion so life is not so precarious. Hopefully a full-time job will follow soon.
Silver Dollar: To Evergreen Healthcare, a nursing and rehabilitation center in Carson City, for arranging to send 120 beds to the earthquake-ravaged people of Haiti. After receiving new beds for residents, the old ones were shipped off where they will be appreciated by those who have lost so much. Brianne Thacker, activities director at Evergreen, said of the residents, "They watch the news and saw all this devastating stuff happened. So for them to be a part of this is pretty cool."
Silver Dollar: To Annabelle Younger and husband Wayne Gooch of Stagecoach, who recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of adopting their two 4-year-old great-grandchildren. No one expects at ages 64 and 68 to be running after tots, but the family is taking it all in stride. "There's a reason the Lord has them with us," Annabelle said. "Not a day goes by we don't count our blessings."
