Elk Foundation to host Big Game Banquet

The Tahoe Basin Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will host the 12th annual fundraising Big Game Banquet at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St.

Since 1984, the Elk Foundation and its partners have completed more than 170 conservation projects in Nevada with a value of more than $14.3 million.

Book donations sought for sale

The Friends of the Carson City Library are looking for clean used books for the next book sale on June 12.

All kinds of books are needed from adult fiction and nonfiction to children's books and reference books. Donations of videos, DVDs, CDs, books on tape and records also are needed.

The books and other materials sold in the book sales and in the Friends' bookstore are donations and all proceeds support the Carson City Library. With the recent cuts in the library budget due to the state of the economy, help from the community is more important than ever.

To make donations, bring them to the front desk of the library at 900 N. Roop St. or drive to the back door of the library. Donations also can be picked up for those who need assistance. Call 882-5458 for information, to arrange a pick up or to learn more about the Friends of the Library.

Open Space Committee to meet

The Open Space Advisory Committee meets at 6 p.m. Monday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

There will be discussion and action on the purchase of the Serpa and Bently properties and coordinating efforts with the V&T Commission toward acquisition in the Carson River Canyon.

Muscle Powered's trail construction and maintenance efforts on the Carson Range is also on the agenda, as well as endorsement of an Eagle Scout project by Cody Shelton at the Kings Canyon waterfall and discussion and action of the Question 18 Open Space budget.

McKeen Motor Car 22 celebration set

The Nevada State Railroad Museum will celebrate the delivery of the historic McKeen Motor Car No. 22 at noon May 9 on the historic Wabuska Depot Platform at the museum, 2180 S. Carson St.

The event marks the completion of the decade-long restoration and the

100th-year anniversary of its arrival in Carson City.

Motor car departure times are set for 1:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

First-day commemorative tickets are adults $10 and children $5.

Monday deadline to apply for hunting tags

(AP) - Hunters have until 5 p.m. Monday to apply for big game tags for this year's hunting season in Nevada.

Applications can be submitted online until the deadline. But the Nevada Department of Wildlife cautions that any applications sent by regular mail must be received at the hunt application office by the 5 p.m. deadline to qualify.

High school hosts freshmen orientation

Carson High School will host its annual eighth-grade orientation 6 p.m. Monday in the big gymnasium.

All eighth-graders and their parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

Fundraiser golf outing postponed

A fundraiser by The Committee to Elect Bob White Sheriff has been postponed. The golf tournament originally scheduled for Saturday has been rescheduled for May 23 at Empire Ranch Golf Course.
