RENO, Nev. (AP) - The city of Reno has laid off 100 full-time employees because of the budget crunch.

City spokesman Kevin Knutson today said employees were notified of the layoffs throughout the week.

He says the layoffs affected every department, and another 79 positions will not be filled.

Knutson says a number of long-time city employees decided to retire to help keep younger employees on the job.

The latest round of layoffs was authorized by the City Council on April 8.

The City Council has said more layoffs could be authorized during budget hearings in early May to balance the budget of the next fiscal year beginning July 1.

The city is projecting an additional revenue shortage of $5.2 million by the end of the current fiscal year.
