ELKO (AP) - Elko County authorities are trying to locate the owner of a truckload of human waste that was abandoned along a rural road in northeastern Nevada.

Sheriff Dale Lotspeich says a tanker containing about 2,000 gallons of human fecal matter was found June 2 near Elburz about 20 miles northeast of Elko. It was found along a county road about a mile north of Interstate 80.

Authorities sprayed 15,000 gallons of water into the tanker in order for a septic company to pump out the contents.

The sheriff says the waste was spread out over an area of land to naturally decompose and be absorbed into the ground.

Lotspeich says while the tanker had a Utah license plate, it has proven difficult to track down the person who abandoned it.
