130 YEARS AGO

Years ago when Joe Goodman edited the Enterprise, he occasionally wrote a poem. Here, in a small part is one called "The Stage Driver's Story:" It was the Geiger Grade, a mile and a half from the Summit; Slack as your hat was the night, and never a star in the heavens. Thundering down the grade, the gravel and stones were sent flying. Over the precipice side - a thousand feet plumb to the bottom.

110 YEARS AGO

We are in receipt of the first issue of the Sparks Tribune, the successor to the Sparks Forum. P. H. Mulcahy, a resident of Carson for many years, is the editor and his son Howard is attending to the business end. The paper makes a fine appearance and is full of news of the railroad town.

80 YEARS AGO

This weekend the Nevada Theatre in Gardnerville will be showing "With Byrd at the South Pole," the only sound record of a most amazing event. The theatre will show "The Vagabond King," a film in Technicolor with singing and talking features.

50 YEARS AGO

Lack of power was the dilemma Sunday and Monday. Oil dealer Bill Lewis ran out of gas near Cave Rock while Mrs. Lewis was busy at the Carson plant pumping 600 gallons of gas for tourists at the bulk station. Tommy Young of Tidewater Oil also used gravity fed pumps to aid stalled motorists.

20 YEARS AGO

The heavy metal band Judas Priest was found not guilty of placing secret suicide messages in records causing two Sparks men to shoot themselves.

10 YEARS AGO

Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn says Nevada must become technologically savvy before it can attract Silicon Valley industries, he told the Rotary Club Tuesday.

• Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
