130 YEARS AGO

A young lady sends the Appeal a thrilling account of the death of her pet canary bird Buttercup and accompanies her note with an acrostic. We fully appreciate the lady's sorrow for her lost bird but decline publishing it to spare readers of the paper from the additional grief the poem would surely cause. The bird was buried at half past 10 o'clock on Sunday morning in the back yard with a ritual improvised for the occasion.

110 YEARS AGO

80 YEARS AGO

Joseph A. Morlock and Kenneth Carter, recently convicted of murder in the first degree in Pioche for the killing of Herbert Hulse are now at the state prison and are now No. 3056 and 3057. Morlock, 25, was a plumber and Carter, 24, an iron worker.

50 YEARS AGO

Lew Gourley of Carson City will fly one leg across Nevada of the rerun of the first coast-to coast airmail flight between New York and San Francisco 40 years ago Sept. 8. Other old time Nevada pilots are asked to assist in the anniversary of Silver wings national flying fraternity.

20 YEARS AGO

The state's five largest hospitals have agreed to some price controls following the 1987 Legislature's cost-

control law. The state (as of 1990) is still in the top three states in terms of health service costs.

10 YEARS AGO

A program designed to snare and cite drivers who don't yield to pedestrians has been getting results, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
