Carson volleyball squad takes 5th in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - Carson High's volleyball team went 5-1 and took fifth place in the Gold Division at the Las Vegas Invitational over the weekend.

Carson went 4-0 in pool play, beating Moapa Valley and Las Vegas by identical 25-22 scores. They beat Arbor View 25-19 and 25-17, and then topped Lyman of Utah 25-17 and 25-15.

The Senators topped Lake Mead Christian Academy 25-18 and 25-18 in Golfd Division play before losing to Gold Division cham and archrival Douglas, 25-13 and 25-19.

"Overall, we were pretty solid until the Douglas game," Carson coach Justin Malley said. "They're a good team. We served everybody off the floor except Douglas. Their ball control was exceptional.

"We played good defense and got some good swings. All in all it was a positive weekend. We took a good step forward. The girls found some confidence and they got a sense of what they are capable of doing."

Elysse Virden and Jeanette Van Sickle had good tournaments on the front line. Virden finsihed with 32 kills and 11 blocks, while Van Sickle had 24 kills, six blocks, 19 digs and nine aces.

Courtney Hack led the team in assists with 35 followed by Bailey Valente with 33 and Elizabeth Bennet-Doran added 22. Jazmyn Stokes contributed 21 digs.

Angela Augusta added 12 kills and 28 digs. Kristalei Wolfe finished with 21 digs and seven aces. Valente led in aces with 15.

Carson plays in a tournament at Galena Friday and Saturday. The Senators' first match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

DAYTON GIRLS SPLIT

FALLON - Dayton High's girls soccer team split four games at the Fallon Showcase Tournament over the weekend.

On Friday, Dayton dropped a 3-0 decision to Fallon and then bounced back with a 6-0 win over Batle Mountain. On Saturday, Dayton lost 4-1 to Sparks and then knocked off the Fallon JV squad 4-1.

Dayton opens Northern 3A play Thursday at home at 3 p.m. against Sparks.

In the opening loss to Fallon, coach Jared Miklich praised the defensive play of sweeper Magdalena Landa and stopper Savannah Parsons.

In the win over Battle Mountain, Serena Pistilli, Amber Brooks, Erica McCoy, Landa, Maribel Ledezma and Samantha Langer all scored. Natasha Wells and Miranda Fowler split time in goal with Fowler credited for two saves. Heather Knudson, Landa and Parsons played well on defense.

Susie Melgarejo scored Dayton's only goal in the 4-1 loss to Sparks.

In the win over Fallon's JV squad, Ledezma scored twice while McCoy and Devon Cates added a goal apiece. Wells and Fowler split time in goal.

VC WINS GRID OPENER

A.J. Landaburu and Cody Morris scored three times apiece and Zach Shell added two scores to lead Virginia City to a 56-28 win over Owyhee in the Northern 1A opener for both schools Saturday afternoon.

Landaburu scored on a kick-off return, interception return and a run from scrimmage. Morris and Shell scored their TDs on runs. The distance of the scoring plays was unavailable.

"Not too bad," VC coach Ron Presley said when asked how his team played. "We had some first-game mistakes, but we persevered."

Shell and Landaburu were the top defenders for the Muckers, who return to action Sept. 11 against Coleville.

DAYTON GIRLS GO 6-1

YERINGTON - Dayton High's girls volleyball squad posted a 6-1 record over the weekend at the Yerington tournament.

"The team is on its way to having a good season," said Dayton coach Monica Halverson. "They are really working well together. Everyone is contributing in one way or another."

Dayton beat Colevlle (25-20 and 25-12), Lovelock (25-20 and 25-23), Spring Creek (25-16 and 25-15), Whittell (25-12, 18-25 and 15-7), Fallon (25-8 and 25-17) and Elko (25-19 and 26-24).

Dayton's only loss came at the hands of league rival Yerington, 25-21 and 25-15. In that match, Madison Foley had seven kills, MacKenzie Kielty with 11 assists and Jamie Darragh had six kills.

"This game was the highlight of the whole tournament," Halverson said. "We were pretty confident that we would play some higher-level ball. A lot of rallies ended on simple mistakes."

Halverson said that Kathie Arias, Erin Edison and Brittney McArthur, Taylor Hill, Cora Jeffreys and Cassie Depew all played well at various times during the weekend.
