One man was killed and another injured following an accident in Mound House on Friday afternoon.
According to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Gallagher, a 2008 Toyota Sequoia minivan was westbound on Highway 50 East just west of the Virginia City turnoff when he crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound 2000 Toyota pickup head-on about 4:15 p.m.
Gallagher said the truck driver had to be cut from the wreckage and both men, the only occupants of the vehicles, were taken from the scene by helicopter.
The driver of the minivan, in his 50s from Dayton, was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Trooper Chuck Allen.
The 58-year-old driver of the truck, from Fallon, sustained serious injuries.
The accident backed up eastbound rush hour traffic for more than four miles and more than two hours from Jeanette Drive to Dump Hill.
Friday's accident is the fourth serious accident on this stretch of Highway 50 East in Lyon County since two people were killed in a fiery collision June 18 near the V&T Railway bridge. On July 21 four people - including a 21-year-old Dayton woman subsequently arrested on suspicion of drunken driving - were seriously injured in an head-on collision at the top of Dayton Hill and on Aug. 18 a Silver City man died following a minor collision near Highlands Drive.
