The Dayton boys basketball team jumped out to a 22-7 first quarter lead and cruised to a 62-25 win over Bishop (California) in the Dust Devils opening game of the Dayton Sutro Classic on Thursday.

Bishop was playing shorthanded because their football team still was in season.

Coach Jason Santos said the Dust Devils used a 2-2-1 press and that caused Bishop to turn the ball over early allowing them to build the early lead. Dayton lead 32-9 at half, extending the lead to 51-18 after three.

Santos praised the play of the defense.

Dayton was led by Dylan Taylor with 15 points. Taylor had a hot hand from long range, sinking three 3s. Jake Koch chipped in 11 points, TIm Ply added nine and Marcos Macias and Tyler Firestone both added eight points.

Dayton was able to play everyone with all but one person scoring. Santos said Dayton shot the ball well from the perimeter.

In other games: Smith Valley beat Rite of Passage, 74-47; Truckee beat Silver Stage, 54-45; and Fernley beat Whittell, 50-35.

The Dayton Sutro Classic continues today with the host Dust Devils playing Truckee at 7:30 p.m.

Santos is looking for the Dust Devils to improve on rebounding, something he said was a priority to improve on early this season.

The games get started at 3 p.m. with Fernley facing ROP, followed by Bishop against Silver Stage at 4:30 p.m., and Smith Valley will battle Whittell at 6 p.m.
